Searching media archives: tracing an answer back to its source

Good media search does more than find a relevant sentence: it lets the user verify it in the original recording.

A transcript is an access layer

In audio and video archives, a transcript makes content searchable as text. Yet transcription does not preserve all context. Speaker changes, overlapping speech, proper names and technical terms can introduce errors. A transcript should not be presented as an unquestionable replacement for the original recording.

Preserve the recording identifier, time range and version of each indexed segment. If a search result returns the user to the relevant moment, they can detect a mismatch and hear the surrounding context. Keep the source link visible next to the summary.

Evaluate keyword and semantic search together

Keyword search helps with names and exact phrases; semantic search can retrieve similar topics expressed differently. Neither guarantees correctness. Evaluate an exact organization-name query separately from an indirect topic question within the same test set.

Very short segments can lose context; very long ones can introduce irrelevant material. Test segmentation against section boundaries, time ranges and conversational structure. Keep the segments used in an answer traceable, and expect the system to acknowledge when no supporting result exists.

Measure quality with real editorial questions

An evaluation set should cover finding the right recording, identifying the right time range, keeping summaries faithful and preserving access boundaries. Review errors such as incorrect names, omitted negation and speaker confusion separately. Human review belongs in the workflow for quotations and summaries intended for publication.
